The Minister of Transport meets with the builder of the Rail Baltica Riga central junction to check the operation of the station during the construction works

On March 30, the construction site at the Riga Central Station on was visited by the Minister of Transport Tālis Linkaits and Mathieu Dechamps, International Business Director of the contractor of this stage (Besix Group, Belgium's largest construction company), and Guntis Āboltiņš-Āboliņš from RERE Group in order to verify on-site the construction works at the Rail Baltica central junction.

Works at the Riga Central Junction are organized in two major stages: first, everything on the south side of the station is built - tracks, platforms, platform canopies, the new station building, the embankment must be completely excavated, the railway overpass must be built and the street areas must be completely rebuilt. Construction in the southern zone will take place until the end of 2023, when the southern part of the new building of the Riga Central Railway Station and also the new tracks will be delivered to passengers and train operators.

Thereafter, from 2024 to 2025, construction works will take place on the other side (northern) of the railway tracks (station square), rebuilding the existing tracks, passenger platforms, street overpasses and the station building itself. Simultaneously with these works, a new railway and pedestrian/cyclist bridge over the Daugava up to Jelgavas Street will be built.

The plan for the construction of the Riga Central Junction envisages the introduction of the European gauge railway in the centre of Riga, the construction of four new tracks, ensuring the service of Rail Baltica international and airport connecting trains, as well as Latvian regional (intercity and suburban) trains.

The construction works will be carried out by the winner of the international tender - BERERIX, the largest construction company in Belgium, the BESIX Group, the national contractor RERE Būve and the Italian company Rizzani de Eccher; the design and construction supervision will be carried out by civil engineers from “Egis-Deutche Bahn”, but the construction design expertise is provided by local experts from "Firma L4".
