Celebrations of Vecpilsētas Street Festival in Jelgava!

On 15 September, everyone was welcome to the Vecpilsētas Street Festival “Historical Testimonies”. Visitors had an opportunity to meet various craftsmen and become acquainted with their crafts – blacksmith, shoemaker, barber, tailor, glazier and other occupations. Together with our colleagues, visitors had a chance to watch a video about the history of the building at Vecpilsētas Street 14, have a virtual trip in the building before its renovation, study archaeological findings and create a memorial authentic wall painting of the building.

“Up until now, quite many historical testimonies have been found; however, we can show only a small portion ‘live’,” states Helēne Jansone, a representative of the contractor RERE Grupa, also adding that one of the most interesting findings in the building at Vecpilsētas 14 is a groat dating from 1650, whereas several horseshoes were found in the building at K. Barona Street 50, which shows that there has been a stable in the past.

The company representative tells that, currently, cleaning works have been performed in the building at Vecpilsētas Street 14, the damaged structures have been dismantled and preparatory works are being implemented in order to raise the building by approximately 15 centimetres and strengthen its foundations in the second half of next week. “Simultaneously, an artistic survey of architecture is being carried out,” says H. Jansone. It has to be added that today the contractor allows visitors to use a pattern to create for themselves one of two wall paintings, which were found in the building at Vecpilsētas Street 14.
