Wreath for the ridgepole of Turaida manor Socage house

Today, on the 18th of May, the ridgepole of Turaida museum reserve Socage house was decorated by the traditional wreath. One of the stages of the restoration of the building in Turaida historic center, built at the end of the 18th century, has been completed - the characteristic frame of the building and the rafters have been renovated.

“Socage house has now obtained its general shape with apparent characteristics of a building from the end of the 18th century. The main works - restoration of the foundations of the building and construction of the frame and the rafters - are now complete and the next stage of the restoration can begin. The renewed Socage house is unique because of materials used in its construction - boulders, wood, clay mud, lime mortar and reed roof”, explains Līga Ermane, Member of the Board of the SLLC “Valsts nekustamie īpašumi”.

Director of Turaida museum reserve Anna Jurkāne told us: “By restoring the building and setting up an exhibition in the Socage house, the Turaida museum reserve has set a challenge in line with the aims of the celebration of the centennial of the Latvian state. The main aim was to bring attention to the history of Latvia and the events that influenced the formation of the state, and to strengthen the public awareness of the Latvian statehood as a natural consequence of a continued development.”  The core theme for the exhibition in this building will be “Socage. Master. Citizen.”

Thanks to the permission of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia to renew the Socage house for the Latvian centennial celebration, on the 25th ofJanuary 2016 Turaida museum reserve concluded a contract with the SLLC “Valsts nekustamie īpašumi” on the organisation of a construction project and acquiring funding.

The Socage house is being renovated by the general partnership “RERE MEISTARI 1” and currently the clay mud exterior wall construction has been started.

“Us, the builders, are always honoured to work on buildings with a high added value. This site is special, as its contents will tell the future about the past. We are rekindling the ancient and lost skills by bringing them into the future,” says the Member of the Board of SIA “RERE MEISTARI” Ervīns Koncevičs.

SIA “Valsts nekustamie īpašumi” has made a contract with the general partnership “RERE MEISTARI 1” on the restoration and reconstruction of the Socage building in the value of 517 230.80 EUR. Turaida museum reserve will repay the capital investment in 10 years’ time from their own revenue.
