Unveiled painting in the memory of Roberts Vecums-Veco

During the European Cultural Heritage Days which took place throughout Latvia over the weekend, the waiting room of the Rehabilitation Clinic of Riga 1st Hospital held a ceremonial unveiling of a painting in the memory of the master of the monumental decorative sculptures and restoration expert, our own Roberts Vecums-Veco.

Honouring Roberts Vecums-Veco's contribution to the protection of Latvia's construction and craftsmanship, historic and architectural heritage, the event brought together colleagues, representatives of restoration and craftsmanship associations, architects, clients in the field of cultural and historical building restoration works, like-minded people and Roberts' wife, Zaiga Vecuma-Veco.

The memorial painting depicts the coat of arms of Riga 1st Hospital. The painting symbolically intertwines the story of the 1st hospital, which is one of Roberts' last work sites, with Riga's construction culture in general and the role of the expert himself in it. The memorial painting tells a short story about Robert's work in the restoration of several hospital buildings. The initiator of the idea of the memorial place is architect Anna Vasiljeva; the author of the painting is Aija Rulle.

Roberts Vecums-Veco was a long-term expert of restoration works of JSC RERE Group, as well as actively worked in public organizations of the industry - Latvian Restorers' Association, Latvian Chamber of Crafts, International Council of Monuments and Sites, where he was an expert of architectural heritage in Latvia. Back in 2015, Roberts Vecums-Veco also started working in the Riga municipality's cultural heritage preservation program.

The experience and knowledge of Roberts Vecums-Veco is invested in almost every restoration project of national significance - the master has participated in the 1st round restoration works of the Parliament (Saeima), Small Guild, National Theatre, Benjamin House, Riga Stock Exchange, Riga Cathedral as a project manager; he also managed and consulted 1st stage construction and restoration works of the Latvian National Museum of Art. One of the most recent works of Roberts Vecums-Veco was related to the return of ancient buildings in Jelgava. Roberts' broad vision and ability to see the ancient structures integration into the modern urban environment has helped to advance the idea that has now materialized in the establishment of the Zemgale Restoration Center in Jelgava. Roberts has also comprehensively worked on the restoration of several buildings of Riga 1st Hospital.
