An agreement is concluded on the reconstruction of the Jelgava State Gymnasium

Today, on 28 April, in the assembly hall of Jelgava State Gymnasium, the Chairman of Jelgava Council Andris Rāviņš and the Chairman of the Board of the construction company RERE BŪVE Valdis Koks signed an agreement on the reconstruction of the building. It is planned to complete the reconstruction works of Jelgava State Gymnasium at the end of December 2018, and the total cost of the construction is 8,242,868 euros.

These extensive reconstruction works will start around 15 May, when the construction permit will be received. Dismantling works will be implemented initially, preserving the cultural historical value, and then construction works will be launched. The building, where Jelgava State Gymnasium is currently located, was built according to the design of the architect Valdis Zebauers and was put into operation in 1939. It is considered as the largest building for primary school and one of the largest and most monumental school buildings of those times in Latvia.

The new building will have four floors and 24 classrooms will be set up. Separate premises are planned for drawing and singing classes as well as for the classroom of physics, chemistry and natural sciences. A gymnastics hall with a changing room as well as premises for doctor's and dentist's cabinet, and a separate laboratory for needs of the school doctor will be set up in the new building. The dining hall will accommodate approximately 300 students. Large and convenient manual training workshops are intended to be set up for boys. In addition, a library and archives will also be located in the building. Two large terraces will be constructed on the roof floor, where students will have a chance to exercise outdoors during an appropriate season. In addition, new service connections – heating, sewerage, water pipe, gas and electricity – will be installed, adjusting them to the existing arrangement of the premises.

Taking into consideration the considerable age of the gymnasium, the building has been flooded several times during flood periods, leaving consequences in its foundation. Therefore, it is also planned to perform the full construction of the drainage system around the building, stadium and in the basement floor for the foundation of the building, installing a drainage network and eliminating the flooding consequences.

Extensive changes will also be implemented for the school stadium, the total area of which constitutes 6,511.10 square metres. After the reconstruction works, there will be two streetball courts and a volleyball court, two long jump pits, a shot put area, two dodgeball courts, ball throwing area, high jump area and a running track. The bicycle parking racks are also planned to be moved to another place – it will be located along Ūdensvada Street and will accommodate 58 bicycles.

At the solemn event of signing the contract, the Mayor of Jelgava Andris Rāviņš emphasised that “the moment of historical truth and restoration has come – yesterday, we received from the State President an approval of the large coat of arms of the city, which is one of unifying symbols of Jelgava. This building is also among the historical objects of Jelgava, which we will be able to start renovating at last following long bureaucratic processes. Historically, our city has been the centre of cultural, scientific and economic growth and, therefore, our task is to preserve this status. This school is not only a building, and it is important to achieve that, when returning here, students could see a qualitatively done work!”.

“For us, it is always a great pleasure to build, reconstruct and restore buildings with high value added – the National Museum of Latvia, National Library of Latvia, currently, Mezaparks Open-air Stage and the building of French Lycée. Today, we will also receive the keys of this historical building and soon will launch the extensive and responsible reconstruction works. We will put together our professional capabilities and attitude to ensure that the students return back to this building within the term specified in the contract and it serves for its main goal – to educate our new generation”, told the Chairman of the Board of the construction company RERE BŪVE Valdis Koks.
